"Peri-urban agriculture is playing an increasing role in supplying towns. It provides the urban populations involved with the major part of their income. It is located inside and around towns, and concerns specialized sectors, such as market garden crops, small-scale livestock rearing, poultry farming, fish farming, agroforestry and associated postharvest operations. Its location ensures easy access to services and markets, but it is also a source of pressure on resources, and the cohabitation of town-dwellers, growers and livestock farmers can lead to conflict. Peri-urban agriculture remains precarious. The main challenge is thus managing peri-urban areas on a concerted, long-term basis, to sustain these activities whilst providing farmers with a stable income and satisfying demand from the towns. The research sector took up the challenge several years ago. In this book, researchers from CIRAD and CORAF member countries recount their joint work on peri-urban production system dynamics. This is done in an original way, for each urban site where research work has been carried out by researchers from CIRAD-CORAF teams. In particular, a substantial amount of joint work has been done by CIRAD-CORAF researchers in Brazzaville, Yaounde, Maroua and Dakar. Three main lines of research are presented in the different contributions: the identification, characterization and diagnosis of farms; natural resource management (land, water and organic waste) via an integrated, concerted approach and concerted commodity channel and market management (intensification and professionalization in the commodity channels). Information systems and the pooling of complementary expertise are also presented as crucial for dialogue and negotiation between the various urban stakeholders." (from back cover of book)
"The workshop has enabled the strengthening of fruitful relationships between researchers working on this issue, in the French speaking and English speaking community. These relationships enabled the development of different activities including the following:
- the preparation of a methodological workshop on urban agriculture in Western and Central Africa (June 2000, Dakar);
- the writing of a case study on urban agriculture in Dakar for a Reader on urban agriculture (ETC/GTZ);
- the development of research on urban agriculture around Yaounde;
- the start of research on periurban agriculture in South-East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia).
Periurban agriculture was identified as a key issue in CORAF planning workshops, which encourages the design of a regional project in West and Central Africa, once sustainable partnership has been identified in this region.

L'agriculture périurbaine joue un rôle croissant pour approvisionner les villes. Elle procure aux citadins qui s'y consacrent l'essentiel de leur revenu. Pratiqu ôe dans les villes et à leur proche périphéie, elle concerne des métiers spécialisés, comme le mara îchage, le petit élevage, l'aviculture, Ia pisciculture, l'agroforesterie et les activités de postrécolte associées. La localisation offre, certes, des facilités pour accéder aux services et aux marchés, mais elle est source de pression pour l'usage des ressources. La cohabitation entre citadins, agriculteurs et éleveurs peut créer des nuisances. L'agriculture périurbaine reste un secteur précaire.
L'enjeu est donc de gérer, dans Ia concertation et Ia durée, l'espace périurbain pour pérenniser ces activités, en assurant un revenu régulier aux agriculteurs et en satisfaisant Ia demande des villes. Un enjeu dont s'est saisi Ia recherche depuis plusieurs années.
Notre ouvrage présente les travaux de chercheurs du CIRAD et des pays membres de Ia CORAF sur Ia dynamique des syst èmes de production périurbains. Ce bilan est présenté de maniére novatrice, par site urbain, où des travaux de recherche ont été réalisés par les chercheurs des équipes CIRAD-CORAF. Ainsi une attention particuli ère a-t-elle été portée aux villes de Dakar, Brazzaville, Yaoundé, et Maroua. Dans ces villes, des outils d'identification, de caractérisation et de diagnostic des exploitations ont été développés afin d'appréhender Ia diversité des profils des exploitants et les changements rapides de leur localisation. Une approche intégrée et concertée a éeé adoptée pour une gestion durable des ressources naturelles: foncier, eau, déchets organiques. Enfin, Ia sécurisation des revenus des opérateurs a mobilisé des référentiels technico-économiques et des outils de gestion concertée des filiéres et marchés qui favorisent une intensification raisonnée des systàmes de production.
